PLATINUM MAKIE YAMABUDOTORISU FOUNTAIN PEN (2010s)
Another amazing item of Platinum's Maki-e art is the fountain pen with the squirrel and grape design or in Japanese called Yamabudotorisu. Grapes are typically associated with something fortunate, virtuous, and successful, squirrels are animals who store food for the winter, which translates to storing money or treasure for the future. The grape leaves stand for abundance, liberation, and regeneration.
Raden is the technique of decorating using shell inlays. Raden has created exquisitely crafted and applied grapes on the cap. The raden's ability to reflect light in many colors gives this pen a shifting shimmer. This pen is exceptional because it is a hand-painted pen made with the expertise and craftsmanship of Japan, which dates back several millennia. 'Koen', the craftsman, signs the bottom of the pen barrel.
An airtight screw-on cap that keeps ink from drying out is the pen's distinctive "Slip and Seal" mechanism. In comparison, Platinum's Slip and Seal cap keeps the fountain pen from drying out for more than a year even when it isn't used for as little as two to four weeks. In addition to an international warranty, the pen is packaged in a wooden gift box along with a Platinum converter and one cartridge of ink.
